24:57.530 --> 25:02.690 In that case your device sends a dns query to a special server called a recurse of resolver 25:02.690 --> 25:06.150 By default this resolver usually belongs to your isp 25:06.150 --> 25:12.590 The resolver then contacts a root dns server root servers don't know exactly where example.com is 25:12.590 --> 25:17.050 But they point your query to the right top level domain server or tld server 25:17.050 --> 25:22.470 These are the servers responsible for extensions like com.net.edu and dot org 25:22.470 --> 25:27.610 Since you ask for example.com the query heads to the dot com tld server 25:27.610 --> 25:30.770 The tld server doesn't know the ip address either 25:30.770 --> 25:35.550 But it knows exactly which server does and it's called the adoritative name server 25:35.550 --> 25:41.630 Finally your query reaches the adoritative server which provides the actual ip address of example.com 25:41.630 --> 25:46.910 This ip address is sent back to the resolver which saves it in this cache for future use 25:46.910 --> 25:51.510 Then the resolver sends it back to your device which also caches the address temporarily 25:51.510 --> 25:54.310 So next time you don't have to go through all these steps again 25:54.310 --> 26:01.110 But the ip address found your device sends your original request directly to example.com and just like that the website loads 26:01.110 --> 26:03.410 Usually this process is done in milliseconds 26:03.930 --> 26:09.650 By now you probably see the privacy risk in this process and if not take a closer look at the dns resolver 26:09.650 --> 26:16.150 Remember if you're using default dns settings your request usually goes straight to your isp's dns resolver 26:16.150 --> 26:18.110 And here is where the problem lies 26:18.110 --> 26:25.650 These dns queries are sent unencrypted meaning your isp can easily see and log every domain name you look up in plain text 26:25.650 --> 26:30.130 Even worse dns requests often include extra details about your device 26:30.130 --> 26:37.270 Making it easier for your isp or anyone else watching to identify you even if you think you're anonymous on public wi-fi 26:37.270 --> 26:42.230 When you use your isp's default dns resolver, you're at the mercy of your isp 26:42.230 --> 26:44.430 Open name won't misuse or sell your data 26:44.430 --> 26:51.730 Unfortunately that trust has been broken before and if that sounds paranoid consider that there's concrete evidence of isp 26:51.730 --> 26:58.790 Sharing browsing history app usage and even precise location data with advertisers data brokers and even government agencies 26:58.790 --> 27:05.330 In fact, many isps have actively lobbied against privacy laws that would restrict this kind of data collection 27:05.330 --> 27:06.970 According to a 2021 27:06.970 --> 27:14.350 FTC staff report the report identified several troubling data collection practices among several of the major isps 27:14.350 --> 27:17.290 And the isps include it where at&t 27:17.290 --> 27:22.010 Verizon wireless charter communications comcast team mobile and google 27:22.010 --> 27:25.750 I'm not saying all isps are shady or out to exploit your data 27:25.750 --> 27:30.730 But you should be aware and take time to research what your isp does with your browsing activity 27:30.730 --> 27:36.490 Some providers are more transparent than others and you can often find those details in their privacy policy 27:36.490 --> 27:41.510 But if you want to protect yourself from isp surveillance, a vpn alone isn't enough 27:41.510 --> 27:46.430 A vpn or virtual private network encrypts your internet traffic and hides your ip address 27:46.430 --> 27:53.190 But unless your vpn also handles dns requests, your device still sends those lookups through your default dns server 27:53.190 --> 27:56.610 Which is often your isp. This is called a dns leak 27:56.610 --> 28:03.430 It means that even though your traffic is encrypted your isp can still see which websites you're visiting by watching the dns queries 28:03.430 --> 28:07.470 If you want to test for dns leaks try dns leak test com 28:07.470 --> 28:12.530 It'll show you which dns servers your device is actually using and whether your vpn is doing this job 28:52.170 So when using doh the domain queries you make are no longer sent in plain text 28:52.170 --> 28:56.650 Making it a lot harder for your isp to see which sites you're trying to visit dns over tls 28:56.650 --> 29:01.250 Works a bit differently instead of sending dns requests through an https connection 29:01.250 --> 29:09.030 It sends them directly over a tls encrypted channel at the transport layer tls or transport layer security uses the same encryption technology 29:09.030 --> 29:13.050 Used by https, but it's not limited to just websites now 29:13.050 --> 29:17.870 Let's jump into three practical ways you can start using to protect yourself from dns leaks today 29:17.870 --> 29:20.030 If you're browsing online without a vpn 29:20.030 --> 29:23.530 Here's a quick way to
